American School is your school of choice, offering quality accredited middle school and high school courses in online and paper-based formats at a cost you can afford! Choose from full-year or full diploma programs, or take individual courses to enrich an existing homeschool program. American School is accredited by MSA-CESS, Ai and NCPSA, recognized by its home state of Illinois, and has been a leader in distance education since 1897, serving students in all 50 states and more than 65 countries around the world.
For most of its long history, American School focused on helping students graduate from high school. Offering courses in grades 9-12 is still a primary focus of American School. To that end, American School offers a general high school diploma program and a college preparatory diploma program. Each program consists of 5 units of credit per year for a total of 20 units of credit required to earn a diploma. The general high school program is designed for students who wish to join the workforce or attend a community college after graduating from high school, while the college preparatory program is designed for students who plan on attending a four-year college or university after graduating from high school. In each program, students can choose between online or paper-based courses, which ensures that they will learn in the course delivery method that is best for them. Curriculum is from some of the leading textbook publishers and curriculum providers, and all course materials are written to specific standards for a particular subject or grade level. Each year of high school costs $1000, making the total cost of a high school diploma program $4000. Monthly payment plans are available, and tuition typically includes all course materials, grading of exams, and access to the online student center, where students and parents and retrieve academic records, monitor course progress and receive additional assistance. If students have homeschooling credit for certain subjects, they may take comprehensive examinations at an additional charge. If they pass comprehensive examinations, they will receive credit for taking those courses at home. If students have credit from an accredited school, they may send American School an official transcript for evaluation. Most, if not all, credits earned at an accredited school will transfer to American School and count toward the 20 units of credit needed to earn American School’s diploma, the main exceptions being band, choir, physical education and driver’s education.
More recently, American School added courses in grades 6-8 to better serve middle school students. Similar to the high school diploma programs, each year of middle school consists of 5 units of credit—1 each in English, math, science and social studies, plus an elective—at a cost of $1000 per year, or a total of 15 units of credit for $3000. Again, curriculum is from some of the leading textbook publishers and curriculum providers, and all course materials are written to specific standards for a particular subject or grade level. Monthly payment plans are available, and tuition includes the same benefits given to students in a high school diploma program.
Some students and families may be satisfied with an existing homeschool program but may wish to add courses for enrichment. American School is proud to offer its courses on an individual basis. Most individual subjects cost $325 each for a full unit of credit and $275 each for a half unit of credit. Select courses cost $225 each for a full unit of credit and $175 each for a half unit of credit, while select advanced courses cost $425 each for a full unit of credit and $375 each for a half unit of credit. In addition to core subject areas such as English, math, science and social studies, American School offers elective courses in business, career and technical education; fine arts; and world languages powered by Rosetta Stone. For select high school students, American School offers select AP courses, with enrollment in AP courses available from approximately July 1 to August 31 each year. There is no limit to the number of individual courses a student may take, and American School accepts enrollments in individual subjects throughout the year.
