Belhaven University Dual Enrollment Review

Belhaven University Dual Enrollment Review

Belhaven University is a Christian university listed as one of America’s Best Colleges by U.S. News and World Report.  The university is a SACS accredited four-year college with a main campus  in Jackson, MS; and branch campuses in Houston, Memphis, Chattanooga, and Atlanta.

Belhaven is known for their Christian worldview curriculum and twenty-two professional arts, science and pre-professional programs. In addition, Belhaven professors, in combination with homeschool parents have designed High Scholars, an online dual enrollment program. Belhaven’s High Scholars program gives students the opportunity to earn 24 college credits and save money at the same time.

I’m a fan of dual enrollment programs.  So I am really happy to do this  Belhaven University dual enrollment review.

What is dual enrollment?

Dual enrollment allows high school students to enroll in college courses for credit prior to high school graduation.  Credits count for both high school graduation, and for college.  Dual enrollment is efficient – it give students a jump-start on college.  Plus, dual enroll classes are a lot less expensive than a traditional on-campus college experience.

Belhaven’s Dual Enrollment Program: High Scholars

High Scholars was designed by Belhaven University specifically for high school students who wish to take college credit courses from home.  Students can enroll for either one or two years and earn 12 credits each year. There is also the possibility of earning additional credit through the university’s partnerships with College Plus, Summit Ministries, and The Potter’s School.

High Scholars integrates history, literature, and the arts from a Biblical perspective, decompartmentalizing the subjects and presenting them as one set of interconnected disciplines. Students use “Worldview Indicators” – questions about God, nature, humanity, morals, and society, to examine differing worldviews and their impact on Western society.

The program is different from many dual enrollment programs, in that it provides a real-time online classroom experience – students aren’t just logging in and out of reading and writing assignments. High Scholars courses include video lectures, power points, study guides, and engaging, thought-provoking weekly assignments. Plus, the faculty provide helpful feedback. But the best part is the opportunity to participate in the live web conferencing classes.  In these discussions, students explore academic disciplines in their philosophical, political, ethical, and spiritual context with teachers and classmates from all over the world.

MORE Ways that Belhaven High Scholar Courses Differ from Other Online Courses

Well, since a picture is worth 1,000 words, I’m going to include the table comparison below.

For High Scholars course titles and credits click here.

So, what does a week look like for a High Scholars Student?

Each week students view six 20-25 minute video lectures, complete assigned homework, and log in to attend two 90-minute class discussions. Altogether, a student spends 3-4 hours/day on High Scholars.

High Scholars tuition is approximately 50% less than the traditional cost per credit at Belhaven. This provides a significant value for homeschool and gap year students.

You can expand your High Scholars experience to achieve an ONLINE Associate of Arts degree or a Bachelor Degree from Belhaven University.

You can view the University Catalogue for information about their online Associate of Arts program at Belhaven here.

Their Bachelor degree program is ranked, “Best Bachelor Program” by US News – and you can read more about it at this link.

Belhaven University has so much to offer!  Dual credit….an online AA degree….online Bachelor programs….and MORE!

This means their programs can GROW with your student. If your student likes the dual credit program, s/he can go on and get an AA or a Bachelor’s degree with the university – and not “waste” credits doing so. I don’t know about you, but I took a number of college courses that didn’t transfer.  This was so disheartening….plus, it was a total waste of time and $$.

What I like about this program:

  • The university put a lot of thought into this program – and developed it specifically for homeschooled students.
  • My child doesn’t have to drive to the local community college to take dual credit courses. This is more convenient – and it’s safer, on many levels.
  • The emphasis on Christian worldview.
  • Integrated study.
  • Opportunity for discussion (required).
  • Online conference rooms.
  • Online class presentations.
  • And MORE – I’m such a FAN of this program! It really is exceptional.
