Change is good and this year we’re changing all kinds of things in the way we homeschool. What, might you ask?
- I’ve always been a mix ‘n matcher – we’ve used a little of this and a little of that. This year, we’re going with a boxed curriculum that I really like. So far, it appears fine as-is. Still, I’m sure I’ll add a little here and there…because that’s just what I do.
- I figured I’d try this, because if I don’t have to design every course and every printable, I’ll have more time to add lessons on life skills, and I’ll have more time to drive my kids to their outside activities. As they’re getting older, they have more and more things they want to do outside the home.
- This year, I’m going to get my husband and in-laws more active in our homeschooling. I’m going to assign science projects, baking classes, etc. to these very capable and loving people. The kids will enjoy it, and I will too.
- We’re going to change our schedule! This is a big change. We’ve always homeschooled 5 days a week. But this year, we’re changing to a 4 day a week schedule. We’re going to leave Mondays free for cleaning the house, doctor appointments, grocery shopping, etc. Maybe I’ll even enroll the boys in a Monday welding class (I looked – the community college offers one).
- Speaking of the community college – this year, my kids are going to take some dual credit courses (they’ll continue with AP courses as well). I find this really exciting! I wish I’d had this opportunity when I was their age.
- This year, we’re going to go on more field trips – and we’re even going to go on road trips. My kids love field trips, especially when I tie them into what I’m teaching. And travel is so educational.
- I’m going to stop comparing myself to others. Doing so is tiring and counterproductive – really, I don’t know why I do it! The wonderful thing about homeschooling is that every family does it a bit differently. So, comparing is silly.
- I’m going to stop trying to be a supermom or a superhomeschooler. I know there is no such thing. We’re all just doing the best we can. No one can cover everything, and there will always be gaps. Kids in public schools have gaps. Kids in pricey private school have gaps. My kids will have gaps too (although I’ll still try to minimize them).
So, this year, we’re going to try a lot of new things. If something doesn’t work, it will be no big deal, we’ll move on to something else. We’ll find what works for us. This is one of the great things about homeschooling and about homeschoolers. We’re not afraid of change. Wow – not being afraid of change – that’s a great life lesson we’re giving our children!
