I asked some of my gal pals, “What kind of homeschooling routines do you have”?
I was curious, and I was kind of wondering, “Am I doing this right?”
In case you’re curious too, I’ve included their answers below.
What Kind of Routines?
Mindy – I’ve been homeschooling for over a decade and I’ve never met two homeschooling families that have the same routine. That’s the nice thing about homeschooling – its family specific – you can do what works for you. I’m presently homeschooling two children. Because we’ve been at it for a while, we have our curriculum and our routines down pat. We spend 30-50 minutes per subject and we do 4-7 subjects a day. We start after breakfast, break for lunch, and finish as early in the afternoon as possible. Then the kids can do whatever they want. That’s also when they have sports, etc.
Janet – Our school day starts at 8am. Each subject is 30-45 minutes in length, and the core subjects are complete by 11am. Then we have lunch, read, have “extra help” time, and this is when we do supplementary/fun/educational things (maybe sewing, car maintenance, cooking, etc). School is Monday-Thursday. Friday is a catch up day if we need it. On Fridays, we might do co-op activities, go to a museum, etc.
Danni – The kids get up at 7 am, do their chores, and have breakfast. We start school at 9 – we do math first thing, followed by science, and foreign language. Basically, we get the hard stuff out of the way, and end the day with electives and family reading.
Sandi – We do about 4 hours of school work a day. Then chores, followed by outside play. Fridays are our flex days where we catch up if we’re behind. On these days, we also run errands, clean a bit, and go by the library.
Shelly – I have 5 children, ages 1 – 15. We homeschool as a family, and do chores as a family. That means everyone helps everyone else. We’re usually done early in the afternoon, although I have two children that often finish their work before lunch. We do all our academic work Tuesdays-Fridays, while Monday is spent on swim lessons, field trips, etc. We’ve found that Mondays are great for this – as most other kids are in school.
In Conclusion
There you have it! Since no one has the same routine – I guess I am doing it right! If you’d like to share your routine, I’d love to know what it is!
