American School offers accredited courses in grades 6-12 at an affordable cost. Do you remember what it was like to walk into a normal history class where you were expected to sit still, listen quietly, take notes, read textbooks, and take tests? That usually had the opposite effect from what the teacher intended. Instead of motivation and participation, students checked out, doing as little as possible to get through the drudgery.
If that rings true, it must be asked: is this model—requiring students to passively take in data, memorize it, then repeat it back on a test—the best way to learn history? Does it build increasing interest, nurture questions and ideas, and promote students’ engagement in active learning?
Probably not.
Because that model only works well for a few while leaving the rest plodding, the History Revealed curriculum uses a different model: designed to honor and work with each student’s “learning style,” ways of being “Smart,” and individual interests. This can really transform the experience of learning for all students!
So, how does this work?
Each month of study provides four different weeks of activity.
Week One: learning by listening, reading, discussing, and lively reviewing.
Week Two: choosing what to explore/discover and how to creatively present/share. No worksheets, no tests.
Week Three: doing hands-on projects for maps, art, architecture, science, music, and/or cooking!
Week Four: creating final expression through drama, dance, art, writing, music, or engineering.
After 1-2 months, your students begin to discover what types of projects and sharing they prefer, and you get to enjoy their delight!
