Ruth Beechick Interview
Ruth Beechick, Ed.D. - 1925-2013 Interviewer: Karey Swan
We recorded this interview at Ruth's Colorado mountain home in 2000, just before Ruth retired from public appearances. Ruth and Karey discuss many issues, including socialization of young homeschooled children and teaching reading, writing, spelling, phonics, and math.
After filming the interview, Ruth also recorded six commentaries that are included at the end of these videos: 'Family Relationships', 'Teaching Reading Part 2', 'Research Skills', 'Computers & the Internet', 'Understanding Difficult Children', and 'Perceptual Skills Development'.
Dr. Beechick was a highly respected teacher who earned her doctorate in curriculum and instruction at Arizona State University. She taught most grades in public schools, including all grades at once in a one-room schoolhouse in Alaska (sounds kind of like homeschooling!) As a college professor she trained others to teach. She authored many books, including her little Three R’s set, which have helped thousands of parents teach their children reading, writing and arithmetic. Ruth was dear to us and is still considered a real treasure by many veteran homeschoolers.
